Elon Musk has publicly acknowledged that xAI's Grok models lag behind Anthropic's frontier systems, even as he highlighted explosive growth for the company's agentic AI platform and rolled out direct finance integrations for Grok Bot.
An Unusual Concession on Model Quality
In an interview with China Media Group, Musk described Grok 4.7 as "a solid workhorse" but admitted it is years behind Anthropic's latest releases. He credited Anthropic's head start in AI research and development, writing on X in July: "I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI."
Musk said he expects xAI to "catch up to frontier" sometime next year, framing the company's strategy around physical-world engineering rather than pure software tasks. While Anthropic excels at code and digital workflows, Musk argued no one has yet built an AI that is great at real-world engineering — a gap he believes xAI can close using data from Tesla and SpaceX.
Grok Bot's 100% Monthly Growth Claim
Despite the quality gap, Musk emphasized rapid adoption of Grok Bot, xAI's autonomous agent platform launched in beta on August 11, 2026. He told the interviewer the platform "is growing about 100% a month," with users subscribing through SuperGrok and Cursor tiers to access persistent AI agents that operate on their own cloud machines.
Grok Bot can sign into apps, browse the web, and complete multi-step tasks without constant human supervision, positioning xAI in the fast-moving "agentic AI" race alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
Finance Integration Goes Live
On Saturday, Musk confirmed on X that "Grok Bot can manage your finances," as xAI enabled a new Finance integration that lets users link bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts. The feature allows Grok Bot to analyze spending, track investments, and act on real-time financial data.
This consumer rollout builds on earlier finance-focused models: Grok 4.5 (July) was optimized for finance and legal tasks, while Grok 4.6 (early September) added SEC/FINRA-compliant tooling for professional advisors. Grok also supports third-party financial data through Model Context Protocol integrations, including portfolio analysis from Truthifi.
Regulatory Questions Loom
As Grok moves from answering questions to executing actions on sensitive financial data, the expansion is likely to attract regulatory scrutiny. Consumer advocates and financial regulators may press xAI on data security, liability for errors, and safeguards against unauthorized transactions — especially as AI agents gain the ability to act autonomously on users' behalf.
Musk's dual message — candid about Grok's current limitations but bullish on agentic adoption and real-world use cases — underscores xAI's bet that practical utility and rapid iteration can compensate for today's model gap with Anthropic.
