Bodies of a couple found in locked room in Savar, dead foetus recovered

Police recovered the bodies of a husband and wife from a locked room in a residential building in Ashulia, Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka. A dead foetus was also found inside the room.

The bodies were recovered around 2:30am on Friday from a first-floor room of a four-storey building in the Madhya Jamgora area. Police initially suspect that the couple may have been murdered.

The deceased were identified as 33-year-old Nazma Akter of Boro Magura Pakpara and her 42-year-old husband Alamgir Hossain, a native of Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur.

According to police and local residents, the couple rented the room on August 9. The room had remained locked for three days. On Friday, nearby tenants noticed a strong foul smell coming from inside and informed the building owner.

The owner initially assumed that a dead animal might be causing the smell. However, as the odour intensified, the owner and tenants broke open the lock and found the bodies of Nazma and Alamgir lying on the bed. A dead foetus was also discovered inside the room, following which police were notified.

Local residents said Nazma was pregnant when the couple moved into the room. She worked at a nearby garment factory, while Alamgir worked as a hawker.

Nazma’s sister said she had last seen her on Thursday afternoon and became concerned when Nazma failed to report to work. She alleged that the couple had been strangled.

Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tariqul Islam said the woman appeared to have suffered a miscarriage before or after the suspected killing, with the foetus estimated to be around five months old.

Police said evidence collected from the scene and the circumstances surrounding the deaths have led them to initially suspect murder. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the deaths.
