55th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad observed

The 55th martyrdom anniversary of Bir Shreshtha Lance Naik Noor Mohammad Sheikh, one of Bangladesh’s seven Bir Shreshtha gallantry awardees, was observed across the country on Saturday with various programmes honouring his supreme sacrifice during the Liberation War of 1971.

In Narail, the district administration and Bir Shreshtha Noor Mohammad Sheikh Trust jointly organised programmes at Noor Mohammad Nagar in Chandibarpur Union. The events began with wreath-laying at his portrait, followed by a guard of honour, Quran-khani, doa mahfil, essay and drawing competitions, and a discussion on his life and heroic contribution.

In Jashore, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) paid tribute at Noor Mohammad’s grave near Kashipur Border Outpost in Sharsha. A guard of honour was presented, followed by wreath-laying, Fateha and special prayers for the eternal peace of his soul.

Noor Mohammad Sheikh was born on February 26, 1936, in Mahishkhola village of Narail, which was later renamed Noor Mohammad Nagar in his honour. He joined the then East Pakistan Rifles in 1959 and was later posted to the Jashore sector.

During the Liberation War, Noor Mohammad fought under Sector 8 in the Jashore region. On September 5, 1971, during a fierce battle in Goalhati and Chutipur, he carried a wounded fellow fighter on his shoulder while continuing to engage the enemy with his light machine gun.

Despite suffering serious injuries from a mortar shell, he continued fighting with extraordinary courage. He was eventually martyred while resisting Pakistani forces and protecting his fellow fighters and their weapons.

Noor Mohammad was buried at Kashipur in Sharsha. In recognition of his exceptional bravery and ultimate sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded Bangladesh’s highest gallantry award, Bir Shreshtha.
