Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is committed to implementing the July National Charter 2025 in full and will work to make the necessary constitutional amendments as soon as possible.

Speaking after a meeting of the Parliamentary Special Committee on Constitutional Amendment, Salahuddin said claims that the BNP does not want to implement the charter because of its parliamentary majority are untrue.

Twenty-six political parties that signed the charter were invited to the meeting. Fifteen attended directly, while one submitted its proposals in writing. Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) boycotted the meeting.

An 11-party alliance led by Jamaat rejected the committee’s approach to constitutional amendments, saying the agreed reforms should instead be implemented as outlined in the July Charter and the February 12 referendum.

Salahuddin said the committee would continue consultations with political parties, constitutional experts, lawyers, former judges, academics and other stakeholders. He said the committee aims to complete its report quickly before the Law Ministry prepares a constitutional amendment bill for Parliament.

He also said the government would implement the charter while retaining the notes of dissent submitted by the BNP on certain issues, including the proposed formation of a 100-member upper house.
