A Dhaka court has ordered the detention of Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, the former information adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with a murder case filed over the July Uprising.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order after police produced him and prayed for custody.

The case stems from the fatal shooting of Mohammad Arif, a 17-year-old madrasa student, who was struck during protests in Dhaka's Jatrabari area on July 19, 2024. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians pronounced him dead.

On August 26, 2024, the victim's father, Mohammad Yousuf, filed a murder case at Jatrabari Police Station, naming Sheikh Hasina, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, and 231 others as defendants.
