The government has made protecting workers’ rights, improving working conditions and expanding quality employment opportunities key priorities, Labour and Employment Adviser Mahdi Amin said.

Speaking at a meeting with ITUC and IOE representatives, Amin said the government would strengthen labour rights, workplace safety, employer-worker relations and social dialogue.

He said the government recently amended the Bangladesh Labour Act and ratified ILO Conventions 155, 187 and 189. Steps have also been taken to improve labour administration and speed up dispute resolution.

The government aims to finalise the Bangladesh Labour Rules quickly and ensure effective implementation of the amended Labour Act, Amin said.

The ITUC and IOE delegation welcomed recent labour reforms, including changes to labour laws, faster trade union registration, workplace safety measures and fair wages.

The meeting also discussed the role of EPZs, the ILO roadmap and cooperation among the government, workers and employers. Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury was also present.
