India has said Bangladesh has not officially informed it about the government’s review of 101 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements signed with India during the Awami League administration.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Friday that India had only seen media reports about the matter. He said India would take all necessary steps to protect its interests.

On September 11, Bangladesh Parliament Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said the government was reviewing 101 agreements signed with India during the ousted Awami League government of Sheikh Hasina, with the results expected soon.

Moni said Bangladesh wanted to maintain friendly relations with India while prioritising the country’s national interests.

He cited arrangements involving Chattogram Port, alleging that vessels from a friendly country could receive preferential treatment over Bangladeshi vessels when both arrived for unloading.

Moni also referred to a road built with an Indian loan, saying Bangladesh was required to repay the loan with interest even though Bangladeshi vehicles could not use the road. He said the government was trying to move away from such arrangements.
