Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has deployed 33 platoons across key industrial areas in Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj following recent unrest in the readymade garment sector.
Shariful Islam, public relations officer at BGB headquarters, confirmed the deployment on Sunday.
In Dhaka, troops have been stationed in Savar, Ashulia and Mirpur. In Narayanganj, deployments cover Shibu Market, Jalkuri, the BSCIC Industrial Area, Chashara, Kanchpur and Shimrail.
In Gazipur, BGB personnel are operating in Chandra, Palli Bidyut, Mouchak, Ambagh, Kashimpur, Nawjor, Bhogra Bypass, Gacha and Salna.
Shariful Islam said field operations are being monitored through real-time video feeds at a technology-supported surveillance room at BGB headquarters.
He added that BGB members remain on high alert and are working alongside local administration and police.
The force said the deployment and surveillance operations would continue to protect lives, property and supply chains while ensuring that factories maintain normal operations.
The deployment follows demonstrations by garment workers in Dhaka, Gazipur and Narayanganj demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000.
Some protests turned violent, leading to clashes with police and groups described as outsiders. Ruling party activists were also seen patrolling streets with sticks.
Tensions have largely eased since the garment sector's minimum wage board held its first meeting on November 4. The board announced that a revised wage structure would take effect in December, with workers expected to receive the updated salaries in January.
The previous minimum wage revision was announced in November 2023 and implemented the following month, raising the monthly minimum wage from Tk8,000 to Tk12,500 — an increase of 56.25%. The current five-year wage cycle is set to end this November.
