Lionel Messi fought back tears after playing his final match for Argentina, saying his departure from the national team could be the saddest day of his career.

The 39-year-old captain scored once and provided two assists as Argentina beat Benin 3-0 before speaking at his farewell ceremony.

“I don't want to leave this place, I don't want to leave the pitch,” Messi said, adding that he would miss the love and support of Argentina's fans.

He said, "Today, I have to live through the saddest day of my career, as I say goodbye to the Argentina national team.”

Messi said he would never forget the night he returned to play for Argentina after winning the World Cup. He said watching videos of those matches still made him emotional.

“I am very proud to have fulfilled my dream,” Messi said, adding that he was proud to play for Argentina and represent the country.

Speaking in front of more than 85,000 fans at Monumental Stadium, Messi said he would support the players who represent Argentina in the future.

He said Argentina would be stronger than any other team if the players remained united.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner said he would miss the fans and the national team after ending his international career.
