No neglect of the education system could be tolerated if Bangladesh was to become a strong and advanced nation, Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan said.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a World Teachers' Day discussion at the Palash Upazila Multipurpose Auditorium in Narsingdi on Tuesday night.

Moyeen Khan said many people considered the United States one of the world's most powerful countries because of its military strength and modern weapons. But an advanced education system was also a key foundation of its strength, he said.

Teachers had a major role in building a strong and advanced nation by educating and guiding young people, he said.

The minister urged teachers to take the responsibility as a challenge and guide the new generation on the right path.

Palash Upazila Executive Officer Ishtiaq Ahmed presided over the meeting. Advocate Rokhsana Khondker, chairperson of Khan Foundation and The Millennium University, spoke as a special guest.

District Council Administrator Tofazzal Hossain Master, Palash Upazila Teachers' Association President Sultan Uddin, and teachers and leaders from various levels also spoke.
