Seven passengers of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw were killed after a bus collided with it in Mymensingh on Friday.

The accident occurred around 1:15pm in the Purbo Gandropa area, in front of Bangladesh Bank on the city’s Akua Bypass.

Mohammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the deaths.

The victims’ identities have not yet been established. Police are trying to identify them using their mobile phones and other information found with them.

The bodies were taken to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. They will be handed over to the victims’ families after their identities are confirmed.

The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene with the bus after the crash. Police later seized the bus, but efforts to locate the two men are ongoing.

Mymensingh Fire Service station officer Mohammad Julhas Uddin said two units responded to the accident. He said a Rajib Paribahan bus heading towards Jamalpur collided head-on with the auto-rickshaw travelling towards the Mymensingh Bypass.

Police, firefighters and local residents recovered the bodies from the damaged auto-rickshaw.

The exact cause of the accident was not immediately known.

Eyewitness Mamun Hossain said he heard a loud crash while going to Friday prayers and went to the scene, where he saw the auto-rickshaw badly damaged. Local people moved the bus aside and helped recover the bodies from the vehicle.
