Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals of the Asian Games women’s cricket tournament on Thursday after their quarterfinal against China was abandoned because of a wet outfield.
Although the sun appeared and both teams completed their warm-ups, the ground remained too wet following earlier rain. The match was called off before the toss, with neither side taking the field.
Bangladesh progressed based on their higher ranking, standing 10th in the ICC T20I rankings compared with China’s 36th.
Bangladesh will play the winner of Friday’s match between India and Japan in the semifinal on September 20. The India-Japan quarterfinal is scheduled for 11am Bangladesh time.
Bangladesh have previously won two silver medals and one bronze at the Asian Games. Ahead of the China match, batter Sobhana Mostary said in a Bangladesh Olympic Association video message that the team was targeting another medal.
The washout also denied China an opportunity to play Bangladesh in an official T20 cricket match for the first time. The teams last met at the 2010 Asian Games, when Bangladesh bowled China out for 34 runs and reached the target in seven overs for the loss of one wicket. That game was not recognized as an international fixture, making Thursday’s abandoned match the scheduled first sanctioned T20I between the two sides.
