On a fiery night at Stamford Bridge on 2 May 2016, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur produced one of the most explosive matches in Premier League history — forever known as the Battle of the Bridge.

Tottenham, chasing their first league title since 1961, arrived needing a win to keep their hopes alive. They started perfectly. Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane put Spurs 2-0 up by half-time, leaving the home crowd stunned and the title race wide open.

But Chelsea refused to surrender. Gary Cahill pulled one back early in the second half, and Eden Hazard curled home a brilliant equaliser late on to make it 2-2. The result ended Tottenham’s title challenge and handed the Premier League crown to Leicester City.

What followed was pure chaos. Referee Mark Clattenburg issued a Premier League-record 12 yellow cards — nine of them to Tottenham players, still the most by any single team in a match. Tempers boiled over repeatedly. Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Erik Lamela and others flew into reckless challenges. A mass brawl erupted before half-time, during which Mousa Dembélé appeared to gouge Diego Costa’s eye (he later received a six-match ban). Even Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink was knocked to the ground in the post-match melee.

Both clubs were later heavily fined by the FA for failing to control their players.

Ten years on, the Battle of the Bridge remains the ultimate example of a London derby boiling over — a night of drama, controversy, and pure football madness that Spurs still haven’t forgotten.
