Rajshahi Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof Md. Jawadul Haque was allegedly forced to sign a resignation letter after a group entered his office on Tuesday. Another university official was also reportedly pressured to resign.
According to the VC’s personal secretary and section officer Nazmul Hossain, the group entered the campus around 11 AM under the banner of “Apamor Chhatra-Janata”. Witnesses and those involved said some members identified themselves as Jatiotabadi Jubo Dal activists.
The VC said the group accused him and Nazmul of being “Awami League collaborators” and of awarding university work to contractors based in Dhaka. He said he had informed the local administration about the incident.
Witnesses alleged that the group entered the VC’s office in a procession, verbally and physically harassed the two officials and made them sign resignation letters that had already been prepared. The two were subsequently removed from their rooms and the university’s main gate was locked.
Nazmul alleged that the group also took a computer CPU and CCTV recording equipment from the VC’s office and disconnected electricity and internet services across the campus. He said he was beaten after refusing to sign his resignation letter.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police said officers went to the campus after receiving information about the incident but found no one there. Deputy Commissioner and police spokesperson Gaziur Rahman said the university had not yet filed a complaint and legal action would be taken if a complaint was submitted.
Rajshahi city Jubo Dal President Shariful Islam Jony denied the party’s involvement, saying none of the people seen in videos from the incident were affiliated with Jubo Dal.
