Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Bangladesh High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi in New Delhi on Tuesday after the envoy made an unannounced trip from Dhaka the previous night.
According to the BBC, Trivedi met Modi at around 1pm local time. Diplomatic sources in New Delhi said he travelled to convey Dhaka’s position on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India, along with views on bilateral issues.
No official statement has so far been issued by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, India’s Ministry of External Affairs or Modi’s office regarding the meeting.
Ties between Bangladesh and India have faced strains in recent years. After Trivedi assumed his post, India resumed all categories of visas for Bangladeshis from June 28.
Modi had also invited Tarique to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, but the proposed visit did not take place.
Trivedi had previously travelled from Dhaka to New Delhi on August 11 after meeting Tarique and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in Dhaka. That visit was also reportedly linked to messages concerning high-level discussions.
