The first wife of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, has been granted bail after the complainant’s father reached a settlement in a case filed over the alleged incitement of his daughter to suicide.
Maksuda received bail on Wednesday after S M Masum Billah, father of the deceased Mariam Khatun, submitted an affidavit stating that he had no objection to the accused being released on bail. However, Gazi Nazrul himself did not receive bail.
Masum Billah appeared before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah in Dhaka on Wednesday and submitted the affidavit on behalf of the accused. The court recorded his statement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Court Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki and defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media.
Mahbubur Rahman said the defence had sought bail for both Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda based on the settlement. He said the complainant had appeared in court and stated that she had no objection to their release.
Gazi Nazrul was sent to jail on Monday after completing two rounds of remand totalling eight days. According to information presented by the investigation officer, Nazrul lived with his first wife in the bedroom of their NAM Bhaban flat, while his second wife Mariam sometimes had to spend the night on the adjacent balcony.
Police also told the court that their investigation had found information indicating that Mariam had been subjected to physical and mental abuse.
Mariam, 19, was found hanging inside flat No. 203 of NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on the evening of September 20. Police said the door was locked from inside when they recovered her body.
