August inflation eases slightly to 8.26 percent

Bangladesh’s general inflation eased slightly to 8.26 percent in August 2026 from 8.32 percent in July, mainly due to a decline in food prices, according to data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Food inflation fell to 7.02 percent in August from 7.16 percent a month earlier. However, non-food inflation edged up to 9.32 percent from 9.28 percent.

The latest figure was also significantly lower than the 9.42 percent inflation recorded in May, indicating a gradual easing of overall price pressures in recent months.

Rural areas recorded slightly higher inflation than urban areas in August. Rural inflation stood at 8.31 percent, including 7.01 percent food inflation and 9.59 percent non-food inflation.

In urban areas, overall inflation was 8.20 percent, while food and non-food inflation stood at 7.04 percent and 8.97 percent, respectively.

The 12-month average inflation also declined to 8.66 percent for September 2025–August 2026, compared with 9.58 percent during the same period a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the Wage Rate Index increased 8.05 percent year-on-year in August, slightly lower than the 8.22 percent growth recorded in July.
