Alleged torture over theft suspicion leaves Bogura man dead

A 35-year-old man died in Bogura early Tuesday after allegedly being detained and tortured overnight by several people who suspected him of theft.

The deceased, Shamim Hossain, was reportedly detained while walking through Nishindara after attending a relative’s funeral. His relatives alleged that Nishindara Union Parishad Member ABM Shafi and others beat and tortured him throughout the night.

The allegations further state that Shamim’s leg tendons were cut before he was abandoned in a critical condition. A village police member later rescued him and took him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.

Following his death, Shamim’s relatives protested outside the Union Parishad Complex, demanding the arrest of those responsible. Protesters also blocked a road by placing tree logs on it.

ABM Shafi denied involvement, saying he was at home recovering from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He said he received a call around 3:00am about a suspected thief and instructed those involved not to beat the man.

Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali said he visited the scene and confirmed that a man had been beaten to death after being suspected of theft. He said legal action would be taken against those responsible.
