Rangpur family of four found dead, robbery suspected

The bodies of a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, his wife and their two children were found in a three-storey house in the Kamal Kachhna Machuapara area of Rangpur city on Saturday evening.

Police and local residents discovered the bodies at approximately 8:30pm. Following the discovery, members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Rangpur Metropolitan Police sealed off the building.

The victims were identified as 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty; his 50-year-old wife, Pritilata Chakraborty; their 14-year-old son, Ayush Chakraborty; and their 28-year-old daughter, Agami Chakraborty.

CID Inspector Abu Hasan Kabir confirmed that the four bodies had been recovered. He said a strong odour had spread through the building.

Investigators believe the family may have been killed. The four had been residing on the second floor of the building.

AKM Nazmul Kader, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station, said the deaths were thought to have occurred two or three days before the bodies were found.

After visiting the scene, Rangpur CID Officer-in-Charge Sumit Chowdhury told reporters that the preliminary evidence pointed to a possible robbery. He estimated that the incident could have taken place three or four days earlier.

Police said the building’s power supply had been disconnected and storage areas believed to contain money had been forced open. The initial examination also indicated that the victims might have been strangled.
