Country’s voter count rises to 12.86 crore

As of July 31, the number of registered voters in the country has risen to 12,86,32,555, Election Commission (EC) Secretariat Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said today.

He noted that the voter base grew by 309,315 between May 14 and July 31.

Akhtar shared the information during a briefing held at the EC Building in Agargaon, Dhaka.

He added that the existing voter list will be used for the upcoming local government elections for the time being. However, if the election schedule is revised, the Election Commission may later publish a supplementary voter list depending on its decision.

The EC Secretary also said that the code of conduct for the local government polls was sent to the Ministry of Law earlier today.

According to him, the regulations related to city corporations, district councils, upazila parishads, municipalities, and union parishads have already been forwarded.

He further mentioned that the proposed legal amendments have not yet been submitted, explaining that the process is still underway and the documents will be sent once finalized.

Regarding the presidential election, Akhtar said that the collection of nomination papers began today.

He said a BNP delegation collected nomination forms in the morning, while no other party or candidate had done so yet.

So far, he added, BNP has taken two nomination forms.
