Court sends Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir to jail over Facebook posts on PM

A court in Bogura has sent Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, the recently suspended joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), to jail in a case filed over allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Facebook.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hasan of the Bogura Sadar Cognisance Court passed the order around 12:00pm on Tuesday after Tanvir was produced before the court.
Police arrested Tanvir at around 5:30am from the Manipur area of Dhaka before bringing him to Bogura.
The case was filed on August 2 by Bogura Sadar Upazila BNP President Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel under the Cyber Security Act 2026. The complaint alleges that Tanvir posted defamatory content targeting the prime minister on Facebook.
According to the case statement, Tanvir, who was serving as an NCP central leader at the time, made a Facebook post on July 29 regarding the recent attacks in Sylhet, which allegedly contained defamatory remarks about the prime minister. The complaint also alleges that he published another post shortly afterwards containing similar remarks.
Earlier, on July 31, the NCP central executive committee relieved Tanvir of his responsibilities as joint member secretary and issued him a show-cause notice over the Facebook posts.
