Suspected crude bomb blast leaves three critically injured in Barishal

Three members of the same family were critically injured in a suspected crude bomb explosion at a house in Barishal's Bakerganj upazila on Sunday morning, police said.

The explosion occurred at around 6:00am at the residence of Shah Alam Howlader in Dudhlamou village under Bharpasha union.

The injured were identified as Shah Alam's wife Hanufa Begum, daughter Eti, and grandson Fahim. They were first taken to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex before being referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment.

The blast caused panic in the area, prompting local residents to rush to the scene. Police later cordoned off the area, collected evidence, and launched an investigation.

Bakerganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain said it was too early to determine the type of explosive used or identify those responsible.

"The incident is under investigation. The type of explosive and those involved can be confirmed once the investigation is completed," he said.

Shah Alam's son, Jamal, claimed the explosion was caused by a crude bomb kept inside a sack of sand beside the house.

He said his mother, sister, and nephew caught fire after the blast and jumped into the nearby Tulatala River to put out the flames. He added that the family had no idea how the explosive ended up there.

Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the cause of the explosion and identify those responsible.
