Bangladesh will observe National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Saturday, marking the 51st anniversary of November 7, 1975.

On the eve of the occasion, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages highlighting the day's significance and calling for national unity to protect the country's independence, sovereignty and democratic rights.

The President described November 7 as a defining moment when soldiers and civilians united to protect national sovereignty. He also compared the events with the 2024 mass uprising, urging people to overcome political differences and work towards a democratic and just Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the Liberation War of 1971, the events of November 7, 1975, the anti-autocracy movement of 1990 and the 2024 uprising reflected a shared struggle to protect independence and democratic rights. He stressed that national unity was essential to prevent future threats to the country's sovereignty.

The government has declared the day a public holiday and announced programmes including flag hoisting, special prayers, discussions, cultural events and children's competitions. Hospitals, prisons and other institutions will serve improved meals, while public children's parks will remain open free of charge. The Armed Forces and agencies under the Home Ministry will also organise special programmes.

The ruling BNP will observe the occasion through a seven-day programme from November 5 to 11. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and party leaders will place wreaths at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. A rally will be held in Nayapaltan at 3:00 PM on Saturday, alongside programmes across the country.

Opposition Jamaat-e-Islami will also observe the day. Party Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman recalled the uncertainty following the counter-military coup of November 3, 1975, saying the united efforts of soldiers and civilians on November 7 brought a new dimension to the situation. He added that public participation, accompanied by the slogan 'Nara-e-Takbir, Allahu Akbar', strengthened their resolve to safeguard national independence and sovereignty.
