Police arrested four people linked to banned organisations affiliated with the Awami League after multiple crude bombs exploded near the Kalabagan bus stand in Dhaka on Friday afternoon, close to the residence of International Crimes Tribunal-2 Judge Manjurul Bashid.
The blasts occurred around 12:30pm on Mirpur Road in the Kalabagan area. According to police, a group of 10-15 activists arrived on seven to eight motorcycles near the Kalabagan Krira Chakra field, displayed banners, and detonated four to five crude bombs in an apparent attempt to create unrest.
Dhanmondi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge rushed to the scene upon hearing the explosions. The suspects reportedly threw crude bombs toward him, but he managed to subdue and arrest two of them. Kalabagan police later detained two more suspects as others fled.
The arrested individuals are:
Md Nazmul Hasan, 49, joint secretary of the Tejgaon Thana unit of Jubo League
Md Billal Hossain, 45, a Jubo League activist
Md Shaminur Rahman, 53
Kamrun Nahar Lipi, 50
All four are described by police as leaders or activists of banned organisations linked to the Awami League. Cases have been filed against them at both Dhanmondi and Kalabagan police stations.
Thirteen unexploded crude bombs were recovered from the scene and from the possession of the detainees. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police Bomb Disposal Unit later defused the devices. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials, including Assistant Commissioner Saddam Hossain of the Dhanmondi Zone and Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehedi of the Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed the details. The arrestees are currently being held at the respective police stations for further interrogation.
