Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped a dinner hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the first day of the BRICS Summit, drawing attention to his absence from the high-profile gathering.
The two-day BRICS Summit is being attended by leaders from the 11 member countries and 10 partner countries, along with representatives of several international organisations.
The dinner was part of the events organised alongside the summit, with leaders and senior officials gathering for informal discussions. Xi’s decision not to attend the dinner, however, became a notable development during the first day of the summit.
The reason for Xi Jinping’s absence was the focus of reports surrounding the event, as the Chinese president’s participation in the summit had been closely watched amid the broader diplomatic engagements between India and China.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to conclude today, with participating leaders expected to discuss key international and economic issues.
