Qatar backs Bangladesh amid current energy challenges

Qatar has assured Bangladesh of all possible support in ensuring energy security, particularly amid the country's current challenges.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani made the assurance when Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman met him at his office in Doha on 19 August, according to a press release from Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, Khalilur conveyed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's greetings to the Qatari leadership.

The Bangladesh foreign minister also expressed solidarity with Qatar and praised its "constructive and responsible" role in promoting peace, security and stability in the region.

Sheikh Mohammed described Bangladesh as a "brotherly country" and reaffirmed Qatar's support for Bangladesh's energy security.

The two sides also discussed bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.

Sheikh Mohammed congratulated Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and reiterated Qatar's commitment to supporting him in carrying out his responsibilities successfully.

Khalilur invited the Qatari prime minister to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.

Later, the foreign minister met Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi and discussed issues of mutual interest.

PM's Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and senior officials from both countries were present at the meetings.
