US calls for greater global support for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has called on the international community to increase support for Rohingya refugees living in camps in Cox's Bazar, where more than one million displaced people are being sheltered by Bangladesh.

During a visit to the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya on Friday, Gor said the United States has continued to support the refugee response and urged other countries to increase their contributions.

Leading a 14-member high-level delegation, the US special envoy visited Camp-4 and observed humanitarian activities carried out by the World Food Programme (WFP). US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen accompanied the delegation.

Earlier, Gor met Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman in Dhaka and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Following the meeting, Gor said discussions focused on strengthening relations between Bangladesh and the United States, while the foreign minister said bilateral ties are progressing positively and cooperation continues across multiple areas.

Meanwhile, the United States has lowered its overall travel advisory for Bangladesh from Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) to Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution), citing improved conditions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move reflects growing confidence in Bangladesh's security environment and stability, while noting that some areas remain subject to additional travel restrictions.

The government said the revised advisory recognizes its efforts to improve law and order and highlights the positive direction of Bangladesh-US relations.
