A striking video of the Marianne statue at Paris’s Place de la République, draped in a yellow vest reading “2026 LA POLICE INUTILE ET INEFFICACE” (“2026 The Police Useless and Ineffective”), has exploded online, with users calling it “the video of the century.”

The short clip, filmed amid thick smoke and classical architecture, captures the iconic bronze figure of the French Republic wearing the high-visibility vest long associated with the gilets jaunes movement. Shared widely on X, the post quickly amassed over a million views and tens of thousands of likes.

The image emerged during nationwide demonstrations on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Hundreds of thousands of protesters—students, teachers, trade unionists, and Yellow Vest activists—took to the streets over rising living costs, education problems, and grievances against police. What began as marches in Paris and other cities escalated into clashes involving tear gas, fireworks, burning vehicles, and more than 1,200 arrests, according to authorities.

In Paris, the Place de la République became a focal point. Protesters placed the yellow vest on Marianne, turning the national symbol into a pointed statement against law enforcement. Similar symbolic acts, including the covering of a Joan of Arc statue in Toulouse, circulated alongside the video.

The Yellow Vest movement, which first surged in 2018 against fuel taxes and inequality, has reappeared in force, joining broader discontent. Interior Ministry figures put participation around 550,000, while unions claimed higher numbers. Dozens of officers and protesters were injured amid the unrest.

The viral footage that is circulating has become an instant emblem of the day’s tensions, blending historical symbolism with contemporary rage and ensuring the image of a yellow-clad Marianne will linger long after the smoke clears.
