Biman Bangladesh Airlines has formed a four-member committee to investigate a technical malfunction that delayed a flight carrying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his entourage in Japan. The committee has been asked to submit its findings promptly.
The airline’s public relations department confirmed the development on Friday.
A Biman spokesperson said the airline routinely forms internal investigation committees following aircraft-related incidents to establish the facts and identify the causes.
The committee will be headed by Biman’s Chief (Planning and Scheduling). Its other members are the Chief Engineer (Engineering Production), the Deputy Chief (Flight Safety) and the Manager (Legal Affairs), who will serve as member-secretary.
The committee has been instructed to submit its report to the airline’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Its terms of reference include identifying the exact cause and nature of the technical malfunction, reviewing the measures taken to ensure the aircraft’s airworthiness, and assessing the incident’s impact on flight schedules, passenger inconvenience and the airline’s institutional image.
On Thursday night, Biman flight BG 377, carrying the Prime Minister and his entourage, departed from Japan’s Narita International Airport around five and a half hours behind schedule because of the technical problem.
A Biman engineering team, assisted by Japanese technicians, completed the necessary repairs.
After the repair work, the aircraft was pushed back at 7:43 PM Bangladesh time and took off for Bangladesh at 7:55 PM on Thursday.
