The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has sentenced Mahbubul Alam Hanif, joint general secretary of the activities-banned Awami League, to death in a crimes against humanity case over the killings of six people in Kushtia during the July mass uprising in 2024.

A three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The other members of the bench were Justices Md Manjurul Bashid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

Three other accused in the case are Sadar Uddin Khan, president of the Kushtia district Awami League and former chairman of the district council; Asgar Ali, general secretary of the district Awami League; and Ataur Rahman, general secretary of the Kushtia municipal Awami League.

The four were charged with three counts, including ordering the killings of six people in Kushtia town during the July mass uprising.

All four accused, including Hanif, are absconding.
