Sydney, Australia: Dr Sirajul Haque, president of the Australia Awami League, has alleged that 126 leaders and activists of the Awami League were deliberately killed in various prisons across Bangladesh due to political vendetta, from the tenure of the Yunus government to the present government.

He made the allegation while speaking as a special guest at the annual general meeting of the Australia Bangladesh Journalists Association (ABJA), held at the Red Rose Function Centre in Rockdale, Sydney.

In his speech, Dr Haque strongly criticised the contemporary political situation in Bangladesh, expressing concern over what he described as the ongoing politics of political vengeance.

“The politics of political vendetta currently prevailing in the country is deeply concerning. The journalistic community must play a leading role in bringing this trend to an immediate end,” he said.

Calling for efforts to protect Bangladesh from political and social destruction, he urged journalists working abroad to discharge their professional responsibilities honestly, objectively and impartially.

Senior leaders of local political, social, cultural and regional organisations, along with a large number of expatriate Bangladeshis, attended the event.

Dr Haque’s remarks, which included the allegations over the deaths of Awami League leaders and activists in prisons, sparked considerable discussion among attendees.

Other speakers at the meeting also emphasised improving the standards of objective journalism among expatriate media professionals. They stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy political coexistence and a democratic environment both in Bangladesh and abroad.
