Detectives have identified a former BRAC University student suspected of sending a bomb threat targeting the university’s permanent campus in Dhaka. The suspect is currently in the United States, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB).
On October 4, an email sent under the name “Typical Chinaman” threatened a large-scale bomb attack at the university on October 6 at 11am. The message was sent to three email addresses used by the university’s human resources department, registrar and students.
Following the threat, the university filed a general diary with the police, prompting an investigation by law enforcement agencies. The DB’s Cyber and Special Crime Division conducted a parallel inquiry and identified the sender as a former student who left for the United States before completing his studies.
Investigators said “Mushfiq Rajin”, the name used in the threat, was an alias. The suspect’s real identity has not been disclosed, reportedly to protect the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also informed the relevant country’s embassy in Dhaka.
BRAC University subsequently filed a case under the Cyber Security Act with Badda Police Station on October 7. The case was filed by the university’s security supervisor, Ashraful Islam, without naming any individual as an accused.
Investigators are examining whether the suspect acted alone or had links to an extremist group, as well as the motive behind the threat. Several agencies involved in countering extremism have also begun looking into the incident.
The university’s security supervisor said no student named Mushfiq Rajin was found in its records. Meanwhile, the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Sumon Mia of Badda Police Station, confirmed that multiple agencies were working on the case but declined to disclose further details.
