Bangladesh's Election Commission will hold Union Parishad (UP) elections in five phases, with the first round of voting scheduled for January 21.

The decision was made at a commission meeting on Monday chaired by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin.

Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah briefed journalists after the meeting.

He said elections would be held in about 4,500 Union Parishads in five phases. Voting is scheduled for January 21, February 4, April 29, May 13 and May 27.

The first phase will cover 80 upazilas, marking the start of the local government election process.
