The University of Dhaka will hold its 54th convocation on January 26 next year, with President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attending as the university’s chancellor and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as guest of honour. Professor Atsushi Sunami, president of Japan’s Sasakawa Peace Foundation, will deliver the convocation address.

Both the President and the Prime Minister have agreed to attend the ceremony, according to a statement from the university’s Public Relations Office.

On Sunday, Vice-Chancellor Professor ABM Obaidul Islam met the President at Bangabhaban and formally invited him to the event. During the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor briefed him on the university’s recent academic and research activities, campus security, industry-academia collaboration and joint initiatives with international universities.

The President described Dhaka University as a leading institution not only in higher education but also in the country’s politics, history, heritage and culture. He urged the university to improve the quality of education and research to bring it closer to the world’s leading institutions.

A university delegation accompanying the Vice-Chancellor included Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs Professor Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Administration Professor Mohammad Almozzameddi Alfechani and Treasurer Professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Preparations for the convocation are also underway. A meeting held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium formed an executive committee, a management committee and several subcommittees to organise the event.

Professor Sunami will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree, while Professor Dr Muhammad Harunur Rashid, a donor to one of the university’s trust funds, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree. The decisions were approved by the university syndicate following recommendations from the Academic Council.

Applications to attend the convocation will open on November 1 and close on November 30. Graduates and medal recipients who earned their degrees based on examination results published between November 20, 2022, and November 30, 2026, will be eligible to participate.
