Mamata Banerjee arrested in Delhi

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been arrested in Indian capital Delhi. Mamata has been arrested on charges of illegal demonstration. 

On Saturday, Mamata Banerjee sat on a dharna in front of her house on South Avenue in Delhi. Dola Sen and Derek O'Brien were with her.

Delhi Police came and asked them to leave the place. They asked them to withdraw the dharna. But even then Mamata and the rest of the Trinamool members continued to sit on the dharna. They were arrested after that.

The incident comes against the backdrop of heightened security arrangements in Delhi on Saturday, October 10, as protesters and political leaders assembled around the planned demonstration.

Security restrictions and detentions have been reported in connection with the protest against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Further details about the police action involving the three TMC leaders, including whether they were formally arrested or detained, are awaited.
