A clash broke out during an eviction drive on a footpath in the Mirpur-10 area of the capital on Wednesday with reports of attacks, vandalism and arson.

During the incident, police and hawkers engaged in a chase and counter-chase, while hawkers allegedly set fire to a city corporation vehicle and vandalised a police vehicle.

The incident took place around 10:30am on the footpath in front of Hope Market.

Mirpur Model Police Station Duty Officer Md Shahidul Islam confirmed the information.

According to sources, a fire broke out during the eviction drive in Mirpur-10, reportedly due to an electrical short circuit.

Angered by the incident, hawkers and roadside traders allegedly set fire to three city corporation garbage trucks and vandalised an excavator and a police vehicle. Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel were deployed to control the fire.

Rakibul Islam, duty officer at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room, said three fire service units rushed to Hope Market after receiving a report of the fire.

He added that a group of unruly people obstructed fire service personnel while they were trying to carry out their duties.
