Nicole Kidman reflects on divorces and marriage to Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman has spoken about her divorce from musician Keith Urban and reflected on her marriage to actor Tom Cruise, recalling how she was warned that being Cruise’s wife could overshadow her career.

In a new interview with Vogue, the 59-year-old actor discussed experiencing two divorces under intense media scrutiny. She married Cruise in 1990 and divorced him in 2001, while her marriage to Urban began in 2006.

Kidman filed for divorce from Urban in September 2025, citing marital difficulties and irreconcilable differences. Their separation was finalised out of court by January.

Describing her second divorce as a difficult period, Kidman said she had not expected her life to take that direction.

“I didn’t expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now,” she said, adding that people make plans for their future but ultimately have to adjust when circumstances change.

She also described the period as one in which she felt fearful and deeply vulnerable. However, she said she chose to move forward with hope rather than withdraw from the situation.

Asked whether her experience with Cruise had helped her deal with the media attention surrounding her second divorce, Kidman said each experience felt different.

Reflecting on her marriage to Cruise, whom she married at the age of 23 when he was 28, Kidman said their relationship initially felt completely natural.

“We just fell madly in love and it was that simple,” she said.

Kidman recalled being told that marrying such a major movie star would affect her career. At the time, however, she said she was more concerned with her relationship than its potential impact on her professional life.

She said that after becoming Cruise’s wife, people pointed to the changes in her career as proof of their warnings.

Kidman said she did not regret choosing marriage, saying she was willing to put her career aside for the man she loved.

The actor also revealed that she sometimes goes dancing in disguise to avoid being recognised.

She said she wears glasses and occasionally a dark wig so that she can dance without attracting attention. She added that she usually takes people with her and feels comfortable as long as she is surrounded by others.
