Arsenal ended a 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield on Sunday, beating Liverpool 1-0 to return to the top of the table.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute as Mikel Arteta's side secured all three points against the defending champions' rivals on their home ground.

Arsenal had last won a league match at Anfield in the 2012-13 season, when they claimed a 2-0 victory.

The Gunners took advantage of Manchester City's defeat by Brighton to move three points clear at the top, with 24 points from nine matches.

Declan Rice set up the opening goal with a pass across the face of goal, which Havertz converted with a low finish at the far post.

Liverpool responded with sustained pressure and created several opportunities to equalise before half-time.

Florian Wirtz came close with a free-kick that struck the crossbar, while Alexis Mac Allister also missed with a header. David Raya produced an important intervention to deny Liverpool another opportunity.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession early in the second half but struggled to break through Arsenal's organised defence.

Arsenal threatened to double their lead in the 73rd minute when Christos Tzolis fired towards the far corner, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson produced a superb one-handed save.

Havertz's early strike ultimately proved enough, handing Arsenal their first Premier League win at Anfield since 2012.

The defeat left Liverpool fifth with 15 points, nine behind leaders Arsenal.

Manchester City remained second with 21 points, followed by Brighton on 19 and Chelsea on 16.
