British actor and comedian Russell Brand acted as a "ruthless, calculated, and manipulative" sexual predator who targeted six women over a decade, prosecutors told a London court as his trial began at Southwark Crown Court.
The 51-year-old performer has pleaded not guilty to seven charges, which include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. The alleged offences occurred between 1999 and 2009 across various locations, including hotel rooms, workplaces, and private addresses.
Opening the case for the Crown, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC told the jury that Brand possessed an indiscriminate and voracious sexual appetite, describing how women were treated simply as a means to an end to satisfy his desires. The prosecution stated that he was ruthless, calculated, and manipulative, and that accusers had described him as acting like a sexual predator. The prosecution highlighted that the six accusers did not know each other, yet shared consistent descriptions of Brand using his fame, charm, and influence to exploit them.
Arriving at court alongside his wife, Brand addressed reporters briefly outside the building, expressing concern while remaining hopeful that the legal process would lead to positive outcomes. Brand has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting through his legal team that all of his past sexual relationships were entirely consensual and that his accusers have reimagined their encounters.
The jury trial at Southwark Crown Court is expected to run for multiple weeks as witnesses and evidence continue to be presented.
