Around 280 to 300 people who gathered at the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad) central office in Gulistan, Dhaka, were taken to a police station for verification, according to DMP Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid.
Speaking to reporters outside the JaSad office on Saturday evening, Harun-or-Rashid said members of the Awami League, which is currently banned from political activities, and its affiliated organisations had gathered there along with JaSad members, allegedly with the intention of carrying out sabotage or for other purposes.
He said police took initial measures after receiving information about the gathering, with local students and members of the public assisting them.
Police were checking why the people had gathered and what they had done, the deputy commissioner said. He added that police had information that some of those present chanted “Joy Bangla” slogans and were verifying whether they had been involved in any activities and the reasons behind their gathering.
Further legal action would be taken based on the findings, he said.
Asked about reports that journalist leader Abu Jafar Surja had been detained from the JaSad office, Harun-or-Rashid said police would first verify whether any journalists were among those taken to the station before deciding on further action.
