PM’s Finance and Planning Adviser Dr Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir has said that graduating from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category and achieving sustainable graduation are not the same. He stressed that Bangladesh’s graduation should help strengthen its development rather than create new constraints.
He made the remarks at a high-level dialogue on the LDC Green Industrialisation Facilitation (LDC-GIF) mechanism at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Monday.
Titumir said countries graduating from the LDC category still face structural challenges and limited productive capacity. These difficulties are further affected by geopolitical conflicts, supply-chain disruptions, trade uncertainty, inflation and domestic shocks.
He said graduation needs adequate support to ensure a smooth, sustainable and irreversible transition. This should include industrialisation, integrated development approaches, energy transition and employment generation.
The adviser also urged stronger financial, technological and capacity-building assistance for LDCs, saying actual technology transfer remains far below their needs.
He expressed hope that the LDC-GIF mechanism would speed up technology transfer, its deployment and industrial use while strengthening productive capacity, supporting structural transformation and helping countries achieve sustainable graduation.
