Workers from several ready-made garment factories blocked roads in the capital's Mirpur area on Sunday, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.

The blockade disrupted traffic in Mirpur 10, 11 and 12, as well as surrounding areas, from around 9:00 am, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin said on Sunday morning that garment workers had taken to the streets again in Mirpur 10, 11, 12 and nearby areas to press their demands. Additional police personnel had been deployed at the scene.

According to police and local sources, the protest began around 9:00 am with a blockade at the Mirpur 10 roundabout. Later, workers from several garment factories took positions on roads in Mirpur 11 and 12 and near the Proshika intersection.

Traffic came to a standstill in the affected areas, causing hardship for commuters and people travelling to work.

Earlier, around noon on Saturday, workers left the Mirpur 10 area and gathered in Shah Ali. After 2:00 pm, clashes broke out between workers and garment factory security personnel in the area under Shah Ali Police Station. Workers also vandalised the factory.

They also vandalised a shopping complex during the unrest.

At around 3:20 pm on Saturday, workers threw brickbats at a 22-storey garment factory in the Adarshanagar area of Kalshi, under Pallabi Police Station.
