BNP believes in governing the country through the people's vote and mandate, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said on Saturday.

"BNP always wants to establish a government of the people. We do not dream of coming to power through elections without votes or under the cover of darkness. We want to run the state with the people's vote and mandate," he said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a day-long free dengue prevention and primary healthcare camp organised by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) at Adarsha High School in Mirpur-10 on Saturday morning.

State Minister for Health Dr M. A. Muhit attended the programme as a special guest.

Mir Shahe Alam said BNP prioritised people's rights and interests and was committed to establishing a government accountable to the public.

He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was giving priority to public welfare while taking steps to ensure transparency and accountability.

Administrative action had also been taken against ministers and members of parliament as part of these efforts, he said, adding that activities contrary to public interests would not be tolerated.

Referring to the recent by-elections, the state minister said voters had rejected political conspiracies and overwhelmingly elected BNP-nominated candidates in free, fair and impartial polls.

He accused some political opponents of resorting to divisive politics to conceal their unethical activities, saying voters had rejected such tactics.

Describing BNP as a responsible political party, Mir Shahe Alam said the prime minister had expressed regret in parliament over government shortcomings, including power outages, and outlined plans to address the problems.

He said this reflected BNP's political sincerity and distinguished it from other political parties.

Inspired by the ideals of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, BNP leaders and activists were working to improve people's lives, he added.

He highlighted initiatives to ensure safe drinking water, gas connections, primary healthcare, road development, removal of illegal footpath occupations and tree plantation to make Dhaka cleaner and more liveable.

Expressing optimism, he said Dhaka residents would continue to support BNP candidates in future elections.

Praising the DNCC's free healthcare initiative, the state minister said such programmes would expand access to medical services for ordinary and underprivileged people.

The day-long camp aimed to raise awareness about dengue, identify infected patients and provide treatment to residents of DNCC areas.

Services included gynaecology, child healthcare, dermatology, the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), family planning, non-communicable diseases, nutrition and general medical care. Medicines were also distributed free of charge.

DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan presided over the programme, which was attended by city corporation officials, administrative officers and political leaders.
