State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said local government elections scheduled to begin in January would be free, fair and impartial.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at Banani Bidyaniketan School on Wednesday on Global Handwashing Day.

He said the Thakurgaon-1 by-election was expected to be held peacefully and that local government elections would follow the same course.

The government was not interfering in the Thakurgaon by-election, he said, adding that it would also ensure peaceful Union Parishad elections.

"The BNP government does not want to snatch away the voting rights of the people," he said.
