The death toll from a drowning incident at Himchari beach in Cox’s Bazar has risen to five after another tourist’s body was recovered on Thursday evening.

The body of SM Nafisur Rahman Nibir was found near Bhangar Mor on Kolatali beach around 7pm, said Ramu Police Station chief AK Fazlul Haq.

According to the police officer, locals spotted the body and alerted beach workers and lifeguards, who then informed police. Officers recovered the body nearly 27 hours after Nibir went missing.

On Wednesday afternoon, several tourists were swept away by strong currents while bathing near Himchari Museum. Three bodies—those of Saibul Haq Jisan, Al Mahibul Ibne Mokarem Rohan and Akash—were recovered that day.

On Thursday morning, the body of another tourist, Md Harun, was recovered from the Sagar Nibas area in Himchari.

Police said two groups were visiting the beach at the time: seven young men from Dhaka’s Uttara and five from Chattogram’s Bayezid.

When one member of the Chattogram group was seen going under the water, others rushed to help. None of them knew how to swim, and five were swept away by the strong currents.
