A fire broke out at a drug facility in the Cherag Ali area of Tongi, Gazipur, on Wednesday, prompting 18 fire service units to respond.

The 18 fire service units were battling the major fire with additional units on their way.

Fire service teams from Tongi, Uttara and Kurmitola were among those responding to the blaze.

Shahjahan Shikdar, head or acting officer of the media cell at Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, said the service received a report of the fire on the fourth floor of the factory building at 10:15 am.

Firefighters reached the site at 10:25 am and began efforts to bring the blaze under control, he said.

The Fire Service said chemicals at the factory were initially suspected to have caused the fire.

The extent of the damage and any casualties were not immediately known.
