Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md. Abdus Salam warned on Monday that strict legal action would be taken against anyone who re-established shops on sidewalks after eviction.

He made the remarks after inaugurating beautification work following a drive to clear sidewalk encroachments in front of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.

Salam said hawkers would not be allowed to occupy sidewalks across the city, but could operate from government-designated areas.

He said hawkers would be allowed to use only a few authorised sidewalks and could operate elsewhere on Fridays and Saturdays.

The DSCC administrator said the government was working to make Dhaka a more livable city.

"If an attempt is made to reoccupy the roads after eviction, goods will be confiscated. At the same time, lawsuits will be filed on behalf of the City Corporation," he said.

He said the DSCC would take all necessary steps to develop a clean and modern city and had several plans to achieve that goal.
