Contacting fascism or violating discipline will lead to treason charges

Remarking that some members of the police are still maintaining contact with fascist forces, Home Minister Salauddin Ahmad stated that the government will not hesitate to take necessary legal action, including treason charges, against any police member who fails to maintain discipline.

He made these remarks on Saturday (September 26) while addressing an award ceremony held on the occasion of Police Week 2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium.

The Home Minister said that the role of the police is indispensable in maintaining internal security, law and order, and establishing the rule of law in the country. As the visible face of the state, the police have direct contact with the public. When a citizen becomes a victim of crime or feels insecure, they go to the police first.

He added that the responsibilities of the police are not limited solely to arresting criminals or enforcing the law. The security, rights, and dignity of the people, as well as the citizens' trust in the state, are deeply linked to the duties of the police.

Salauddin Ahmad stated, "We want to build a police force that is modern in efficiency and professionalism, technologically capable, humane in behavior, firm in law enforcement, neutral in discharging duties, and a symbol of public trust and reliance."

Noting that the nature and pattern of crime are changing rapidly in today's world, the Home Minister said that with the expansion of technology, cybercrime, online fraud, digital scams, technology-based crimes, and transnational crimes have emerged as new challenges for law enforcement agencies. To tackle these challenges, the maximum utilization of technology, information, and modern investigative techniques must be ensured alongside traditional methods.

He emphasized that the Bangladesh Police must be transformed into a more modern and technology-driven institution. A dedicated cyber unit is being launched to combat cybercrime. However, no matter how advanced the technology is, the greatest strength of the police is winning the trust of the people. Without public confidence, no law enforcement agency can play an effective role in the long run.

Acknowledging the decline in public trust toward the police, the Home Minister mentioned that the government has made utmost efforts over the past few months since taking office. Attempts are being made to restore the image of the police and win back public trust through institutional, legislative, and administrative support.

He urged members of the police force to realize the importance of boosting their own morale and gaining public trust.

The Home Minister stressed that every member of the police must behave respectfully and humanely with the public. They must listen to the people and treat their problems with importance, striving to deliver expected services in the shortest possible time within the bounds of the law.

He also emphasized realizing the aspirations for change from the 2024 student-people mass uprising and the expectation of building a discrimination-free society. He announced that personnel would be recruited for various positions through short courses if necessary, while also mentioning plans to increase the manpower, equipment, and logistical capacity of the police force.
