A teenager allegedly involved in a car crash that killed a construction worker in Dhaka’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone has not been named in the case, despite being detained at the scene.

The case, filed with Gulshan Police Station under the Road Transport Act, names 44-year-old Akash Marok as the driver. Police said Akash has been absconding since the accident.

The car reportedly veered onto the footpath on Road 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone around 5:00 PM the previous day and struck construction worker Mehedi Hasan, 24. Mehedi was resting on the footpath after work when the car hit him.

People at the scene pulled Mehedi from under the vehicle and took him to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His elder brother, Moktadir Islam, later filed the case, alleging that Akash had driven recklessly and caused fatal injuries to Mehedi.

Police said people at the scene detained the teenager, who was allegedly sitting in the driver’s seat, and handed him over to officers. He remains in police custody.

Gulshan Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Ismail Hossain said the teenager was not named in the case but police would review the CCTV footage. If the footage establishes his involvement, he could be shown arrested.

The CCTV footage circulating on social media appears to show the teenager in the driver’s seat. After the car struck Mehedi and crashed into a streetlight pole, two people exited the vehicle. The teenager emerged from the driver’s side and was later seen walking away before locals detained him.

Police sources said the teenager is an O-level student at an English-medium school in Gulshan. The car is registered in his mother’s name, while his father is a captain with Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

The teenager’s identity has not been disclosed because he is a minor and is protected under Bangladesh’s Children Act, 2013, which restricts the publication of information that could directly or indirectly identify a child in connection with a legal proceeding.
