Mumbai Police has directed actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, to leave India by October 28 after he participated in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
Police issued the notice under India’s Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, citing his participation in the demonstration despite not being an Indian citizen. Khan is believed to hold US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.
The actor joined a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and cousin Zayne Marie Khan also attended. Police detained all three before releasing them later.
Khan said he had joined as a Mumbai resident to question restrictions on freedom of movement and the suppression of public voices. He also described being taken around in a police van for about two hours before his release.
The action followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan had violated OCI rules and visa conditions by participating in the protest. Mumbai Police detained around 400 people during the demonstration.
